A carrier-unlocked phone can use a SIM from another compatible network. It may still lack the bands, eSIM support or carrier features needed for the plan you want. A screen passcode or an Apple or Google account lock is a different issue.
How to check if your phone is unlocked
Check carrier lock status before buying a SIM, traveling or choosing a different network. Being unlocked and being compatible with a network are separate checks.

What unlocked means
Check on an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Choose General, then About.
- Look for Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked.
If it is locked, contact the current carrier. Apple cannot perform a carrier unlock. Read Apple’s official instructions.
Samsung and other Android phones
Ask the existing carrier to confirm unlock status and its eligibility requirements. A carrier name shown in settings does not by itself prove whether the phone is unlocked.
Samsung notes that unlocking requirements are set by the carrier. Read Samsung’s guidance on changing carriers.
Before activating a new SIM
Use the chosen carrier’s device compatibility checker for the exact model or IMEI, and confirm whether you need a physical SIM or eSIM. Do not put your IMEI or account credentials into a public review or comment.
Bring your phone to the shop and ask about current SIM and plan options.
